In February of 2024, multiple large tech companies added new regulations and rules for emailing for bulk sending. So, what does this mean for you?
No matter who you are, it is safe to say that this is good news. If you are just sending and receiving personal emails, this means less spam and fraud emails in your inbox. If you are a business sending bulk emails, this means you have a couple of extra hoops to jump through, which will make it harder for scammers to impersonate your business’s identity. So, what exactly are these changes? We will walk you through what each company’s changes are: Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft.
Google & Yahoo
As of February 2024, all mail sent to Gmail and Yahoo users must follow a stricter process. Important domain and account identifying features must be authenticated with the sender, called SPF or DKIM. These pieces of data will follow the email to the sender, and ensure that an email is not spam or scam. Without these authentication processes, an email sent to Gmail users will never reach the inbox. On top of these requirements, all senders must maintain a Gmail marked spam rate below 0.3%. This means entities must ensure their content stays useful to their recipients.
Bulk senders must follow all of the above requirements, plus a few extra. Google defines a bulk sender as an entity who sends close to 5,000 emails within 24 hours. If emails sent are related to marketing, emails must feature a one-click unsubscribe button that allows a user to opt out of future messages. Headers must follow certain guidelines defined by the domain a sender falls under. This means that impersonators cannot send an email without the exact specifications defined under the domain that they are attempting to impersonate, which makes both business and users more safe when using email communication.
If these guidelines are not followed, emails are then marked as spam or simply bounce with an error code. It is important to know how your business can avoid deliverability issues, and Creative Marketing Group can help maximize your email effectiveness.
Microsoft
Microsoft has taken a different approach to changes in requirements for bulk email. Microsoft Exchange users who send emails externally – to recipients outside their domain – are now limited to 2,000 recipients every 24 hours. Previously, the limit for sending was 10,000 per day. This change moves users who send bulk emails from Microsoft Exchange to Azure Communications, which has many more requirements than a basic Exchange account provides. This transition will limit phishing and fraudulent emails from Exchange users.
